YIN HOUSE

Eden Estates

DESIGN BRIEF AND SITE CONSIDERATIONS

The project is located on a 4.6-acre property in Southwest Ranches, Florida, subdivided into two lots of approximately 2.3 acres each. The client’s vision was to create two custom residences that stand apart from the repetitive white cubic homes commonly seen in Miami.

He requested bold, expressive architecture—two homes in contrast, yet in harmony, inspired by the concept of Yin and Yang. Each house would have its own identity, materials, and spatial approach, avoiding the “copy-paste” feel prevalent in the local market.

This entry focuses on the Yin House, designed with dark textures, charred wood, concrete, and a strong connection between interior and exterior. The house includes social, wellness, and entertainment spaces that integrate seamlessly with the surrounding nature, offering privacy, serenity, and architectural depth.

Concept

The approved design for the Yin House is the result of a clear intention: to create a home that inspires quality of life. More than a set of architectural decisions, it is a spatial choreography that invites the residents and their guests to experience the entire property as a living, breathing organism.

Every corner was designed with purpose. From the moment of arrival to the most secluded garden, the house encourages movement, interaction, and connection—there are no dead zones. The home and its landscape are not just observed, but lived.

By integrating architecture, landscape, water, and light, the design generates layers of emotional resonance:
• Areas for social gathering and spontaneous encounters,
• Places for solitude and introspection,
• Paths that spark curiosity and discovery.

This is a house meant to awaken the senses and strengthen bonds—with nature, with others, and with oneself.

ARCHITECTURE

Signature Feature Design

A Sculptural Arrival Through Water, Landscape and Gardens

Upon entering the site, visitors are greeted by a generous green courtyard — a softscape of grass, pavers, and lush vegetation that sets the tone of serenity and elegance. The architecture emerges as a sculptural form: a faceted volume where the ground floor is defined by concrete planes and transparent glass, while the upper floor appears wrapped in horizontal slats of charred black wood, following the traditional Japanese technique of Shou Sugi Ban.

This sculpted volume subtly opens and folds to welcome guests, guiding them naturally toward the main entrance — a prominent, double-height portal that marks the architectural heart of the home.

To reach this entrance, one ascends a carefully orchestrated landscape. A sequence of wide steps, floating platforms, and water mirrors creates a sensorial journey of ascent. One key water feature frames a sculptural tree rising from the center, while another upper pool spills gently into a lower one, forming a living, cascading threshold.

As guests rise the four-foot elevation to the main floor, they are accompanied by water, greenery, and sky. This approach culminates at the threshold where they may either enter the home or take an alternative path that leads directly to the outdoor social areas — the pool, dining, and BBQ zone — without crossing the interior. The arrival sequence is not just an entrance, but an immersive experience.

Connection through Reflection

From the pool terrace, the view opens toward the Wetland Lake and the distant canal beyond. The water surfaces—pool, lake, and canal—are aligned along a visual axis of serenity and depth. This composition was intentionally designed to reflect the sky, the house, and the landscape in a way that creates a meditative atmosphere. The user becomes immersed in a sequence of reflections that enhance the experience of nature and light, blurring the line between architecture and environment.

A Receptive Embrace Toward Nature

The lake-facing façade unfolds as a welcoming gesture, embracing the garden and pool area like an open arm reaching toward the landscape. This composition creates a natural amphitheater that captures the views, breeze, and reflections of the surrounding environment.

A continuous stepped element runs along this façade, serving different purposes throughout the design: it functions as a stair descending from the BBQ area, transitions into a recessed cascade where water flows gently over the steps from the pool — like a waterfall — and reappears as stairs again near the gym and spa pavilions. This rhythm of solid and liquid creates a dynamic interaction between architecture and landscape.

The gym and spa pavilions are finished in reflective glass, disappearing into their lush surroundings. Meanwhile, the open social wing invites the eastern breeze to ventilate the outdoor lounge, barbecue, and dining areas. Architecture here is not just a shelter — it’s a stage for natural elements to perform.

A sensory encounter with nature and self

Nestled at the threshold between the river and the lake, Reflection Point emerges as a sacred moment in the landscape—a place where all elements converge: fire, water, earth, and sky.

Surrounded by a mirror of water and anchored by a sculptural fire pit, this intimate gathering space offers an immersive experience of contemplation, warmth, and serenity. A sunken jacuzzi complements the atmosphere, while native vegetation softens the edges and enhances the sense of natural retreat.

From this point, one can admire the seamless connection between the built architecture and the untouched surroundings. A footbridge delicately links the Reflection Point to the main house, emphasizing its role as a transitional space—neither entirely landscape nor architecture, but a poetic fusion of both. It is a place designed not just for rest, but for inner pause. A sensory encounter with nature and self.

A Seamless Dialogue Between

Interior and Landscape

The moment the front door opens, the entire space unfolds with a profound sense of openness — welcoming the visitor inside while simultaneously inviting them outward. Directly in front, a vast floor-to-ceiling glass wall (12 feet high) offers uninterrupted views to the garden, pool, and lake beyond. These glass panels, designed as large sliding doors, retract to the sides, dissolving the boundary between interior and exterior

A unique architectural feature — a continuous floor finish — cuts perpendicularly across the entry axis. It begins as part of the kitchen’s island and back panel, continues through the dining area and living room, and culminates at the far end in the main staircase. This unifying design gesture binds the functions of cooking, dining, gathering, and vertical circulation through a horizontal spine of texture and material.

The entry and living room share a double-height volume, flooded with natural light. Above, on the second level, a series of horizontal louvers filter the sunlight, casting changing patterns of light and shadow that animate the interior throughout the day. The result is a first floor that is both open and intimate — a dynamic interplay of transparency, texture, and light.

A Choreography of Space: From the Heart of the Home to its Edges

The double height of the living room continues as a vertical spine into the sculptural staircase — a dynamic architectural element that becomes an experience in itself. At its base, it rises from the floor. Midway, it appears to cantilever from the wall. In its final ascent, it is suspended from above by vertical steel cables, creating a light, floating sensation. This sequence of transitions makes the act of climbing a poetic spatial journey.

Adjacent to this core, the home office is discreetly integrated yet visually open, with large windows that connect it to the exterior.

The family room enjoys views to a side garden that opens toward the parking area, offering a visual relationship between the home, its residents, and their vehicles — a subtle gesture of lifestyle integration.

A fully independent guest room is also located on the ground floor, with direct access from the exterior. It includes its own kitchenette, a private bathroom, and a secluded garden

The rear façade reveals the outdoor social program: a generous covered terrace that includes a barbecue area, an outdoor dining table, and a lounge-style living space — all directly connected to the landscape and pool. Flanking this area are two reflective-glass volumes: the spa pavilion and the gym pavilion. These elements form a gentle architectural embrace around the pool, framing both leisure and wellness within the heart of the home.

The upper floor becomes a private sanctuary, where restful suites, serene terraces, and a cozy family lounge come together to offer a refined retreat. Here, design meets intimacy in spaces crafted for rest, reflection, and quiet connection

As we ascend the sculptural staircase, the experience continues upward with a direct visual connection to the double-height space below. From this vantage point, the living and dining areas unfold beneath us, revealing the spatial continuity between floors.

At the landing, we find the family area, a cozy yet open gathering space that integrates indoor and outdoor living. This space opens onto a covered terrace that faces the east and connects via a spiral staircase to the rooftop level — an ideal spot for sunset views and contemplation.

The second floor accommodates three secondary bedrooms and a master suite. Each of the secondary bedrooms is generously designed with a private bathroom, walk-in closet, and access to a private outdoor terrace, ensuring comfort and privacy for all guests or family members.

The master suite is conceived as a unified but articulated space. Through subtle spatial separations, the bedroom, lounge area, master bathroom, and dressing room (walk-in closet) each maintain a sense of intimacy, while remaining part of a cohesive whole. Expansive glazing and a private terrace bring the outdoors into this serene retreat.

Also located on this level is the laundry room, strategically placed for convenience and functionality.

Outdoor Living Experience

A realm of immersive connection with nature

A contemplative open-air courtyard centered around the pool becomes the heart of the house—an expansive outdoor living experience surrounded by water, greenery, and independent volumes. The covered dining, BBQ, and lounge areas extend seamlessly from the architecture, blurring the limits between indoor and outdoor. Reflective glass façades of the freestanding gym and spa mirror the water and nature, creating an immersive atmosphere of serenity and vitality. This outdoor sequence is completed by a landscaped wetland lake that adds depth, light, and movement to the composition.

Nightfall in Eden

As darkness settles over Eden Estates, a profound stillness takes hold. The absence of urban light and noise gives way to a deeper connection with the natural world. The sky becomes a vast canvas of stars, uninterrupted and luminous, inviting reflection and awe. Surrounded by water, vegetation, and silence, the atmosphere shifts — it becomes more intimate, more poetic. There’s a quiet elegance in the way the architecture blends into the night, allowing nature to speak louder. It’s a moment where serenity takes center stage, offering a sense of refuge and timelessness that only this kind of remoteness can offer.

Water Concept

A natural masterpiece

Miami is a city literally built on water. It sits above a
vast system of aquifers, wetlands, and canals
that connect to the sea. This natural element has always
been a defining part of the landscape, culture,
and way of life. Inspired by this geography, water became
the guiding axis of the design for this project.

The 2.3-acre lot is organized into three sequential zones:
The house (in the first half of the land), The Wetland Lake,
and finally, a contemplative area by the canal.

Throughout the site, we developed five water elements that create
a sensory and symbolic journey:

1. Reflecting pool at the entrance — welcomes visitors and guides them toward the main door.
2. Dark-bottom swimming pool — mirrors the environment and visually extends the social areas.
3. Wetland Lake — transformed into a natural pond,
crossed by a broken-line bridge that invites pauses and offers multiple visual angles of the landscape and the house reflected on the water.
4. Fire Pit surrounded by water — an island-like contemplative space embraced by a water mirror.
5. Canal — the rear boundary of the lot, part of Miami’s extensive canal system that connects the city to the ocean.

This fluid composition of water not only organizes the spatial experience but encourages the entire site to be lived, connecting architecture, landscape, and nature through movement and reflection.

Every Line with Purpose

The design of this home transcends the visual and the experiential — it is rooted in precision. Each plan, elevation, and section reflects a deep understanding of the site, the lifestyle of its future inhabitants, and the architectural narrative that unfolds across every level. From the integration with the lake and the terrain to the smallest detail in the layout, every line was drawn with intent. The architectural plans presented here are more than technical documentation: they are the synthesis of vision, context, and craft.
